I'm making a banana pudding dessert for my family. Some members in my family normally get vanilla pudding mix that you make on the stove and pour it directly on the cookies and bananas while hot. I accidently picked up the instant pudding you add cold milk to and whisk. What should I do?

As the name implies, you don't need to COOK instant pudding. Its instant, just mix as pkg directions say and spoon over your wafers. I make my banana pudding with instant pudding all the time and it comes out GREAT!!! Now you made me want banana pudding....LOL.

No you can't cook it.

It is ready to use.

How to Make Banana Pudding With Instant Vanilla Pudding

Instructions:

Layer 1/2 cup of pudding around the bottom of a large glass bowl. Top with 1/3 of the vanilla wafers followed by 1/3 of the bananas, and 1/3 of the remaining pudding.

Repeat the layering pattern twice, finishing with the pudding mixture on top. Sprinkle with crushed vanilla wafer crumbs. Chill at least four hours before serving.

If you are making a dessert that will need to be cut, like a pie, use only 3/4 of the milk the box calls for. (If it calls for one cup of milk, use 3/4 cup instead. If it calls for two cups, use 1.5 cups instead.) Then, mix it up as directed -- except for the changed amount of milk -- and pour it onto the cookies and bananas before it has a chance to set up properly. As soon as you are done whisking it completely, pour it onto the cookies and bananas. It won't be exactly the same, but it will still be very good and yummy.

Yes! Years ago, I had an Aunt who was a baker did use instant pudding to make her creme patissiere (custard). I was young then & thought it was ridiculous for her to do all those extra steps when she only needed to add milk and stir. Her answer: custard has different texture than instant pudding. I only use it to substitute for eggs & sugar. Today, I want to make custard & I only had instant pudding. So, I pull out the custard recipe & did what my aunt said, substitute it with eggs & sugar. The result is perfect. I get myself great custard, or bake & serve pudding. Here is the recipe I follow:

-6 egg yokes

-1/2 cup caster sugar

-1/4 cup cornstarch

-1/4 oz. all purpose flour

-2 1/4 cups milk

-vanilla pod

-1/2 oz butter.

I drop the 1st 2 ingredients & substitute for that big box of instant pudding, & voila`! perfect french custard. Try it & you will love it. Good luck
