Salsa the dance, or salsa the food? I did Wiki it, but it did not tell me about the origins of salsa (food).

I was having a mini debate saying that the food's name came from the spicy dancing if the, well, dance (but it was only a guess). And with whatever came first, can you please tell me the origin of both names?

The history of Salsa sauce originated with the Inca people. Salsa (combination of chilies, tomatoes and other spices) can be traced to the Aztecs, Mayans and Incas. The Spaniards first encountered tomatoes after their conquest of Mexico in 1519-1521, which marked the beginning of the history of Salsa sauce. Aztec lords combined tomatoes with chili peppers, ground squash seeds and consumed them mainly as a condiment served on turkey, venison, lobster, and fish. This combination was subsequently called salsa by Alonso de Molina in 1571.

What is this thing called Salsa? Have you ever wondered what the word "Salsa" means or its history? It is not something easily defined, as it did not stem from one specific place or person. Instead, it is a combination of multiple roots and cultures as well as the creativity many different persons. In general, Salsa evolved as a distillation of many Latin and Afro-Caribbean dances.

The name "Salsa" is the Spanish word for sauce, connoting (in American Spanish) a spicy flavor. The Salsa aesthetic is more flirtatious and sensuous than its ancestor, Cuban Son. Salsa also suggests a "mixture" of ingredients, though this meaning is not found in most stories of the term's origin.

Hope this helps! =)

Salsa, the food. The dance was named after the food b/c the food is spicy-hot (and so is the dance!)

The first website talks about the origin of the dance, the second website about the origin of the food.

As to the etymology of the word, I would guess that since they are both a combination of many things, that would explain why they share a name.
