I live right on the coast where any restaurant you go to serves amazingly fresh and delicious seafood. So you would think that it would be easy to find quality fresh fish in the local fish market right?

I have just moved to a new town (also a beach town) and was in need of some quality sushi grade fish yesterday. I was having a dinner for 11 people and it was SUPPOSED to be traditional/delicious.

However, my car was in the shop and my hubby who happens to have anosmia ( a condition where you are completely 'smell bind'. poor guy never smelled a thing in his life) was the one to pick it up after work. So I asked him to pick up 2 lbs of tuna, 2 lb of salmon, 1 lb of the best whitefish avail, and 2 lb shrimp.

I asked around, looked up reviews, and it said they were a great market. I called them before my husband showed up and told them exactly what I needed, and that it needed to be sushi grade becuase it was being served RAW. He told me he had great sushi grade fish, and he would have it ready for my hubby to pick up.

Ok...first of all. He sold my husband cooked and seasoned u-peel shrimp

he sold me some bony tilapia with dried yellow edges. I have bought much better frozen.

the salmon was soooo sticky and oily you could actually wipe the grime off of it with a towel.

the tuna (by far the worst) smelled like CANNED tuna. A smell I have never smelled on a 'fresh' fish before. You could touch it would your finger and make a hole in it. when you picked it up by one end it stretched and flaked. You couldnt even cut it w/o it falling apart.

I called.... flipped the hell out. What did you sell to my husband? He tells me....'well people buy it for sushi all the time'. We have never had anyone get sick or complain. I asked where the fish came from-who sold it to him? He said 'he didnt know- but it comes frozen and the box says sushi grade' I told him to get the box and give me the name of the company.

so he put me on hold and then claimed that the trash guy already took the boxes.

This fish wasnt even suitable to be consumed cooked. and 85 dollars later... id like my money back and an apology.

Can I report this? How do I go about something like this? It CANT be safe right? I have bought better looking fish frozen in a bag. He obviously thawed it incorrectly and wasn't storing it right.

So I had to run to the local supermarket and buy shrimp crab and clams. We ended up eating 'cooked' and veggie sushi... I was so pissed after making the rice and pickling ginger. What the hell is wrong with people.

ewww that sounds like a fishy situation, you need to report this to the meat association and if you see the guy again bribe him over and turn the sucker in haha good luck

in my view, i might plenty prefer to get my fish from a fishmonger. regrettably, I easily have not found one close to the place I stay. i be conscious of of an Indoor marketplace that has countless sparkling and frozen fish stalls that are very in many situations going on. that's some trek away at 25miles, yet you could locate what you're identifying to purchase appropriate and that's sparkling stuff. you could tell once you eat it. My dad grew up via the coast and caught his very own fish so he's conscious while fish is robust. i purchase some fish at a time and equipment and freeze it myself for later use. With the frozen fish fillets its of undertaking as to what its like. i assume it would desire to be a case of attempt it and notice in case you like it. some fish isn't available sparkling besides, rather ones from extra unique waters. I sometimes look on the sparkling fish counters of the community food market - occasionaly there are fish that look somewhat sparkling and not the dubiously dry wrinkly looking specimens that look like they have been there too long! I did see that documentary with the undercover newshounds working in fish and meat counters that have been 'advised' that nutrition became okay to re-sell even with being out too long. So i glance long and intently at food market fish counter fish to make certain i'm pleased with what i purchase. Supermarkets at the instant are not continuously the main inexpensive place to purchase fish. come across a good fishmonger the place you're pleased with the extensive-unfold and you be conscious of that's going to be money properly spent on good produce.

If you're in the USA, just write a negative review on Yelp.

Money back... what did you do with the seafood? Do you have something to return?

It's difficult to say if they owe you money back and small shops put up a bigger fight than larger chain supermarkets. The shop can claim that it was the best fish ever, but you or your husband stored/handled the seafood improperly.

However, you can ask for a refund and see what they say. However, I would be more tactful instead of flipping out.
