I've been cooking for over 40 years. If you have older editions of Joy of Cooking, they are dated. Nice for the cookbook collection but not all that useful anymore. It used to be my standard basic cookbook. It's a classic.

I've replaced it with the New Better Homes and Garden Cookbook. It's a great how-to basic book. It's also up to date with contemporary ingredients and techniques. I bought one for my fifteen-year-old grand daughter's Christmas gift. I liked it so much I bought one for myself and one for a friend's birthday.

Fannie Farmer is another classic. But it's outdated. Borrow one from the library and buy the New Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook.

Old recipes are nice to have but they don't always work well in modern kitchens with modern appliances and utensils.

I've never read the Fannie Farmer cookbook, but I love The Joy of Cooking because it teaches you how to do things and why you should do them. And, of course the recipes are good. I think every cook should have a copy.

I have read neither cookbook...cooking really doesn't change...you use the same steps you did 75 years ago as you do today...The only new appliance to a kitchen today that my mom didn't have is a microwave oven...and in my opinion it doesn't help me in my cooking...

If I had to choose one I would probably take the Fannie Farmer...I love old cookbooks...I recently received a brand new cookbook that was published 1 year ago..It had recipes in it that were neither new or incorporated any new appliances...so just because a cookbook is brand new doesn't mean a thing......well not to me anyway...

I say go to the library or the book store and browse the cookbook sections and find something that suits your way of cooking...you will enjoy it so much more..........

Joy of Cooking is more up to date. I have not seen any recently revised copies of the Fannie Farmer cookbook, but I've been wrong before.

Fannie Farmer It was the original Boston Cooking School Cook Book and is still the best one for teaching how to cook almost anything and everything.

It is however not my all time favorite, which is the Better Homes and Gardens New Cook Book.

Joy of cooking. One of the best things about it is at the end of most recipes, it offers you different variations of the same recipe so you are actually getting a lot more information and recipes for your money. It also offers more details about the origins of the recipes and what has changed about them over the years.
