I am cooking Easter Dinner for 8. 3 of my guests are from India. They don't eat root vegetables because they are Jain Vegetarians. French's Onions = Root vegetable. There goes the idea of having the Campbell's Green bean Casserole. However, What if I substituted seasoned bread crumbs? What do you think? I am trying to respect their beliefs while catering to the other guests as well.

Just in case you don't now what a Jain Vegetarian is... this is from Wiki:
Jain objections to the eating of meat and fish are based on the principle of nonviolence (ahimsa, literally "non-injuring"). Every act by which a person directly or indirectly supports killing or injury is seen as violence (himsa), which creates harmful karma. The aim of ahimsa is to prevent the accumulation of such karma. The extent to which this intention is put into effect varies greatly among Hindus, Buddhists and Jains. Jains consider nonviolence to be the most essential religious duty for everyone (ahinsā paramo dharmaḥ, a statement often inscribed on Jain temples). It is an indispensable condition for liberation from the cycle of reincarnation, which is the ultimate goal of all Jain activities. Jains share this goal with Hindus and Buddhists, but their approach is particularly rigorous and comprehensive. Their scrupulous and thorough way of applying nonviolence to everyday activities, and especially to food, shapes their entire lives and is the most significant hallmark of Jain identity. Jains make considerable efforts not to injure plants in everyday life as far as possible. They admit that plants must be destroyed for the sake of food, but they only accept such violence inasmuch as it is indispensable for human survival, and there are special instructions for preventing unnecessary violence against plants. Jains don’t eat root vegetables such as potatoes, onions, roots and tubers, because tiny life forms are injured when the plant is pulled up and because the bulb is seen as a living being, as it is able to sprout. Also, consumption of most root vegetables involves uprooting & killing the entire plant. Whereas consumption of most terrestrial vegetables doesn't kill the plant (it lives on after plucking the vegetables or it was seasonally supposed to wither away anyway). Honey is forbidden, as its collection would amount to violence against the bees.

Cheez It crackers would be yummy on top. So would panko crumbs. You are a very gracious hostess for doing this!

Try mixing the breadcrumbs with a bit of olive oil so they will crisp up or use Panko Bread crumbs, the crumbs are larger and crispy. The usually have no seasoning or just some salt. You can also crush up veggie chips and use that as a topping. I don't want to burst your bubble but Campbell's cream of mushroom soup probably contains milk. You could substitute a bachamel sauce by making it with low salt vegetable broth.

Other options might be:

Sauteed broccoli, green beans, or cauliflower with garlic.

Peas with mint, Defrost frozen peas, melt margarine in saute pan and heat peas, mix in chopped fresh mint.

Green beans almondine, you can buy the frozen or steam your own beans and add slivered almonds

I have had the best results with soaking my chicken in buttermilk and seasonings for a couple days before (2 to 3) then coating it lightly in a mix of flour and seasonings. You can pretty much use whatever your little heart desires but I have had the best luck with Bells Poultry Seasoning. It comes in a little yellow box with a rooster or something on it. The stuff rocks. As for the actually cooking process you can use almost any kind of cooking vessel but I have had the best luck with a cast iron pan. Your oil should be about 325-350 degrees. If you pull out the chicken and its not cooked all the way through you can put it on a cookie tray and put it in the oven to finish.

Sure!! you can use croutons on top of the bean casserole or leave it off entirely. One time I used parmesean and romano cheese on top and it was totally fantastic. Not sure they can have milk products??

The bulb is the body of the onion, the potato is a swelling of the root of the plant.

use non onion croutons, I am anaphalaxys allergic to onion and I am quite familiar with Hare Krishna cooking due to the fact that they do not eat onion , ask them if asafetita (hing) is acceptable to season the croutons with

I think you should just give them water. People this picky shouldn't be catered to.
