I'm making dog treats and it calls for corn meal but I don't have any can I use all purpose flour instead? Or what is the purpose for it? Do I really need it? And is there anything I can substitute cornmeal?

Actually, it's better for the flour if you store it in the freezer for a few days before using. All flour contains tiny bugs called weevils, and the freezing kills the weevils. They are not harmful to eat, but I would suggest sifting flour before use also. I have found them in brand new bags of flour (especially from Gold Medal and Heckers flours).

Dogs really don't need carbs. Cornmeal is about the worst thing you can give a pet. Some animals are sensitive to corn and it gives them diarrhea, some are sensitive to wheat.

If you insist on making dog biscuits, please use oats, and some egg, wheat germ, brewers yeast, anything nutritious. Stay away from spices, salt, sugar, dairy, and white flour.

If you want to make dog jerky treats, try slicing some raw beef roast into thin strips, thread the ends through tooth picks, and dry out in your oven or on food dehydrator. Dogs LOVE jerky. Do not season the beef - garlic and onions are bad for dogs, they don't need salt and pepper, and anything else is toxic.

Dogs love chicken jerky also.

Frozen peanut butter yogurt dog treats

Ingredients

32 ounces vanilla yogurt

1 cup peanut butter

Melt the peanut butter in a microwave safe bowl

Combine the yogurt and melted peanut butter

Pour the mixture into cupcake papers (or ice cube tray)

Place in the freezer

Peanut butter cookies

Ingredients

2 cups of flour (wheat, if your dog has no wheat allergies)

1 cup of rolled oats

1/3 cup of smooth peanut butter

1 tablespoon of honey

1/2 tablespoon of fish oil

1 1/2 cups of water

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Mix the flour and oats together in a large mixing bowl. Pour in one cup of water and blend until smooth. Add in the peanut butter, honey, and fish oil and mix until all the ingredients are well blended.

Slowly add the water until the mixture has a thick and doughy consistency.

Lightly flour a cooking surface. Roll the dough onto the cooking surface to create a 1/4 inch thick sheet.

Use a cookie cutter to create shapes. Place the cookies onto a baking sheet and bake for 40 minutes.

Allow to cool completely before feeding.

You should never ask a pet question on here. You will only get berated by sanctimonious "pet experts" who believe they know what is best for everyone elses animal and that you are a bad owner for asking. Go to your vet. He or she will give you the best advice catered to your dogs true needs. And don't listen to these swine.

the purpose is to make a filler, for both corn meal and flour.

whole wheat flour would be a better sub than white.
