2010-03-11 14:36:27 UTC
I'm an 11 year old girl and my 14 year old sister and I are going to cook dinner for our mom and step-dad for raising us so well. (They taught us how to be safe, do good in school, etc.) And the following is what we plan to make:
Garlic Bread (homemade)
American Chop Suey
Vegetables With Homemade Dip
And for dessert: Ice Cream Milkshakes and Apple Pie (homemade)
W have really good knowledge on how to make most of those foods. But we have no idea how to make American Chop Suey! It sounds and looks simple but I need like, special recipes, mouth-watering sauce recipes and special things like that so it's not just another "ACS" recipe! All of those mothers, grandmothers, dads, uncles, grandpa's, WHATEVER! All of you that cook and know this, please answer... We're Desperate!

How to make American Chop Suey

American Chop Suey is the New England version of macaroni and beef/beefaroni. Some people top this dish with cheese before baking it/finishing it off. I don't season too aggressively to allow each person to do so on their own. Some people also serve this with sweet relish.

1.Roughly chop pepper, onion and celery and set aside

2.Cook pasta according to package directions, perhaps a minute or two less

3.Brown the ground beef in a pan, drain off excess fat

4.Combine ground beef, pasta, vegetables, tomato sauce and tomato paste in a large pot or oven-safe dish. Either finish cooking on stove top (partially covered) over a low flame or in the oven (covered) at ~300F. Since everything has already been cooked this is really just to blend all the stuff together.

I always make my chop suey using mac and cheese as the base. Follow the directions on the box. While the pasta is cooking, I brown some burger, maybe some onion. I drain my pasta then put it back in the same pot for making the cheese because of the leftover heat. Add the burger then add a can of drained stewed tomatoes (you can get the kind with herbs already added), break up the tomatoes cause they'll be pretty chunky. Taste and season, you'll probably need salt.

American Chop Suey

Ingredients

1 (16 ounce) package uncooked elbow macaroni

1 pound lean ground beef

1 onion, chopped

2 (10.75 ounce) cans condensed tomato soup

salt and pepper to taste

Directions

Cook macaroni according to package directions.

Meanwhile, in a separate large skillet over medium high heat, saute the ground beef and the onion for 5 to 10 minutes, or until meat is browned and crumbly. Drain thoroughly and leave the meat and onion in the skillet. Pour the two cans of tomato soup into the skillet and stir well to combine.

When noodles are done, drain thoroughly and return noodles to the pot. Add the hamburger mixture from the skillet to the pot. Mix well and season with salt and pepper to taste.

Yes, go to Food Network, and just for information: Chop Suey is American by nature. It was invented here, not in China, by Chinese restaurant owners catering to miners at the end of the day when all they had were scraps.

Desperation be gone. Good luck with this, its easy & very good. I realize the "Simmer time" is long-its meant to be a slow cooker recipe. You can do it on the stove top in about 20 minutes. Just be careful with the heat. With the tomatoes & cheese its easy to stick & burn.
