Eggplant, like tomatoes and potatoes is a member of the nightshade family of plants. These store solanine, an alkaloid poison, in the green parts of the plant only. So a ripe Eggplant fruit won't contain poison. COOKING DOES NOT DESTROY SOLANINE, so raw or cooked makes no difference. Eggplant does contain other compounds which can make it bitter and some people are sensitive to some of them. To reduce the bitterness and the amount of those compounds, slice the eggplant, salt all cut surfaces, wrap in cloth and let stand, covered and refrigerated for a few hours or overnight. Squeeze the excess liquid out and discard. Rinse and prepare anyway you like.

Eggplant has solanine in it, it is a member of the nightshade family, and solanine is a poison, but you'd have to eat a whole lot of raw eggplant to consume enough solanine to hurt you. I ate a raw eggplant from my garden just the other day had found it to have a dry, very mild cucumber like flavor.

No it isn't. I have been served marinated, raw eggplant at a very nice restaurant. It was delicious. The smaller eggplants are better raw than the large ones. The bigger ones tend to be bitter raw.

It is not "toxic", but it will give you food poisoning. I suggest cooking it very well. I once cooked it, and it was half-raw, and then it made me throw-up because it was uncooked. So yes, watch how you cooked it.
